Cetim strengthens its expertise in material fatigue

14/11/2025

The Center has just invested in a fatigue testing machine that is unique in Europe

Fatigue: this phenomenon, which refers to the gradual degradation of a material subjected to repeated stress, can lead to its failure. To prevent such failures and extend the service life of components, Cetim is conducting characterization and modeling work at its sites in Senlis, Nantes, and Saint-Étienne in France.

Its equipment pool has now been enhanced with a high-end piece of equipment: a gigacyclic fatigue machine capable of performing alternating or undulating tests at very high frequencies, up to 20 kHz, well above the usual standards (15 to 150 Hz). In particular, it allows the behavior of materials to be studied beyond one billion cycles in just 14 hours, which is an essential asset for demanding sectors such as aeronautics and energy. This equipment, the only one of its kind used in a service-oriented R&D laboratory in Europe, strengthens Cetim’s expertise in fatigue, materials, digital simulation, and modeling.

This acquisition, which is part of the strategic e-Mobility (electric mobility) and CEDRE (environmental and energy transition in industry) projects led by Cetim, will be presented at the Fatigue Design conference on November 19 and 20 in Senlis. This event showcases the most innovative approaches and the latest scientific advances in design methodologies and tools, with a focus on industrial applications. This year’s theme is the green economy!
